One thing that I have realized over the years is that we spend so much time focusing on how to love other people, we have neglected to learn how to love ourselves. What helped me start focusing on myself is using the Five Love Languages and implementing them on myself. These are 5 general categories which outline the type of actions that make you feel most loved by your partner but also by yourself. The 5 categories are Time, Physical Touch, Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, and Gifts. Knowing your love language is so important. Because just like you want to make sure your partner is loved by using their love language, the same should apply to you. Once you figure out what makes you feel most loved, what is stopping you from applying those actions to yourself? This could also be considered self care actions as you are doing something that makes you happy and loved. Here is a quiz to find out your love language.
Now that you know your love language its time to put it to use. Below, I list some examples of ways that you can apply your love language to yourself.
Physical Touch
- Book yourself a massage
- Make a bubble bath for yourself
- Take a long shower, include scrubs and scented soap. After lotion your body
Time
- Spend the day out in nature
- Schedule time to do an activity you enjoy
- Take yourself out to eat
Words of Affirmation
- Write in your journal
- Speak to yourself in a mirror and validate all your positive attributes
- Listen to a podcast about affirmations/self love
Gifts
- Go on a shopping trip
- Purchase that one thing you’ve always wanted
- Book that trip you have always wanted to take
Acts of Service
- Tidy up your space
- Complete that one chore you have been procrastinating on
- Go through your possessions and donate unused or lightly used items.
