Tulum was always on my list of places I have to visit before I die. My original plan was to go for my future bachelorette party because who wouldn’t want to spend some time on the beach with your best friends? But the opportunity came to go to Mexico with my boyfriend and our friends. We first went to Mexico City before we headed to Tulum.
Day One:
When we arrived at Tulum, the weather immediately reminded me of Puerto Rico and I immediately knew that I would love this place. We flew into Cancun because there is no airport in Tulum itself. Our resort in Tulum provided a van that we booked for $200 roundtrip which included our party of 4 with our suitcases and the drive to the resort a well as back to the airport at the end of our trip. When I was doing my research, there were cheaper options such as taking a bus from Cancun to Tulum or even renting a car but since it was our first time in Mexico, we did not want to take the chance of elongating our trip (the drive would be 1 1/2 with no stops) by going on a public bus which would make several stops along the way, or getting lost if we drove ourselves.
When we arrived to our resort, it felt like it was hidden in the woods. And when we walked in, it felt like I had walked into beach heaven. Our resort in particular really tried and succeeded in bringing the outside in. We stayed in the Diamante K resort. The reason we picked it was mostly because we booked this whole trip the month before and there weren’t that many options left. But also because when we saw the pictures, we really liked the whole rustic, cabana feel and how they succeeded in making us feel as if we were living within nature, while giving us privacy at the same time.
We were shown to our room and they brought us a complimentary cocktail which was such a nice touch to our first day! We got settled into our room which felt like we were in a treehouse and then headed out to explore the rest of the resort. By the time we arrived to Tulum it was early afternoon, so we were starting get a little hungry. We decided to try to guacamole from the onsite restaurant just to get a sense of how good the food was and let me tell you, it was probably the best guacamole I have ever had. And of course I had to try their maracuya (passionfruit) drink as its my favorite tropical drink. It was a little watered down for my taste but still pretty good.
We relaxed by the beach for a little while and then we dressed for dinner which we also had at the onsite restaurant. There was the most amazing view of the ocean as we enjoyed our first night in Tulum.
Day Two:
The next day we decided to rent scooters so we could explore Tulum much easier and faster. There were a bunch of scooter rental shops available all over Tulum. Usually what happens when you rent a scooter is that you have to leave collateral, most likely it would be your passport. And if you don’t have your passport than they will usually charge an absurd amount of money as a deposit which you will get back once you return the scooter.
I was so nervous to ride on the scooter. It was my first time and of course I was imagining everything bad that could happen. But once we started driving it was so much fun that I forgot about all my fears!
Of course we had to stop for some margaritas on the way because when in Mexico you must have Tequila/Mezcal drinks as least a handful of times.
We also explored southern Tulum which is where most of the clubs and resorts were located. There was a lot of traffic and seemed to be very lively but my group and I were thankful that we picked a resort in mid-Tulum in the ecological area because it was much more quieter and less populated which was out preference. But if you are looking for crowded lively and lots of clubs/bars then definitely stay in South Tulum.
Day Three:
We spent out last day touring outside of Tulum. Specifically we wanted to get to experience a cenote (a lake located in a cave) and we wanted to see one of the 7 Wonders of the World Chichen Itza. We found this amazing tour on Airbnb experiences that was a full day of activities. It included a resort pick up in the company’s van, transportation to first Chichen Itza, then free lunch at a beautiful restaurant in the city of Valladolid.
After lunch we then cooled off in local cenote. When I first booked this trip, I thought this “local” cenote would be one where most tourists go to. But I was super excited when I arrived at the cenote and the tour guide was true to his word. This truly was a local spot. We had the cenote to ourselves and got to meet the family who took care of the cenote. It was truly an amazing experience and I felt like I was in another world when we descended down into the cool dark cave. We were able to swim in the cenote and jump from the diving board that was there. IT. WAS. AMAZING. Highly recommend experiencing a cenote.
Tulum was a dream come true! I absolutely loved it there, and I can understand why a lot of people decide to stay there permanently. The weather, the food and the people were amazing. I am already planning my trip back!
